Warning: The following information presented should only be used after training adequately with a qualified instructor.
We often hear from gun owners that their defense of choice is, of course, their gun. That if they found themselves under attack, that they would defend themselves by using their weapon. ‘I’ll just shoot them’ is not only a legally irresponsible way of thinking it is also not realistic for your own personal safety and the safety of your loved ones. Self Defense should not start or stop with this single minded mentally but should look at all variables that may come into play in a violent attack. What if you can’t get to your gun? If you have a gun for home protection and do not have a Conceal Carry license then what will you do if you are on the street? What if the gun is secured in your car and not on your person and you are attacked? What if the gun jams? Self Defense training should take into consideration the ‘what if’ part of the scenario and you should have an answer for it. If operation of your own gun is not available to you then hand to hand self defense should be part of your personal safety plan and training.
In a hand to hand gun defense, the main objective is to neutralize both the threat and the gunman. A person who threatens with a gun wishes to achieve something – obtain money, property, move you, or use you as a hostage. Perform the technique as quickly and as soon as possible. You have to recognize an opportune time to neutralize the threat at gunpoint which may be when the attacker’s attention is slightly distracted, such as when he is talking, giving orders, or listening to pleas of mercy.
The basic principles behind the defensive moves at gunpoint are:
1. Defensive action of redirecting and avoiding the line of fire
2. Controlling the weapon
3. Neutralizing the gunman by attacking him
4. Disarming the gunman
Again, hand to hand gun defense needs to be practiced and trained with an instructor. Each stage of the defense has key points and considerations that need to be clearly understood. Training and practice is absolutely necessary for proper hand gun defense.
